TeenTix's 20th Anniversary Gala

TeenTix Raised $124k for Arts Access and Youth Empowerment during our 20th Anniversary Gala - THANK YOU!

Written by TeenTix Staff Liz Houlton

CRP 452 full filled room and Tucker

On May 10, 2024, TeenTix celebrated a milestone 20th anniversary year at our annual Gala. Nearly 200 friends, fans, and champions joined us at Seattle Center’s Fisher Pavilion on a bustling Friday night on campus (a Melanie Martinez concert at Climate Pledge and multiple performances across the fountain) to fundraise for our mission centering arts access and youth empowerment.

In the theme of Prom 2004, we let nostalgia take hold of our imaginations and rolled out the red carpet photo booth, hand-made the corsages, decorated with various pop-culture 2004 moments, and spiked the punch (for those old enough to enjoy). The night was accompanied by an inspiring performance from Seattle Jazz Ed featuring three of their teen musicians who quite literally silenced the large room with smooth, wispy, and jazzy tunes. A Legacy of Internment & Immigration Detention

Review of Resisters: A Legacy of Movement from the Japanese American Incarceration presented at the Wing Luke Museum

Written by Teen Writer Maitreyi Parakh and edited by Teen Editor Esha Potharaju

2022 Exhibit Resisters Max Chan 7

Resisters: A Legacy of Movement from the Japanese American Incarceration is an unintentionally misleading gallery. The impersonal nature from which history is often told is drastically subverted in this exhibit, featured at the Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience from October 14, 2022, to September 17, 2023. The gallery is a special exhibition designed by Scott Méxcal, written by Tamiko Nimura, and developed by Mikala Woodward. The exhibit is structured similarly to a maze, where you—placed into the shoes of Japanese Americans facing these aggressions—are led through the passage of time without being able to anticipate what will come up next.

Stories in history that are fraught with tragedy are often dulled down into easy, comprehensible individual values when they are retold. Retellings frequently pick and choose their facts simply by virtue of being a retelling. It would be impossible to cover every single event without meticulously recreating it step by step, as some parts are naturally lost over time. To only cover the certain pieces of the exhibit that remain would be an injustice to all the stories left untold—and to cover the entire exhibit as if it is a holistic record of internment camps would do the same. Instead of picking and choosing a few specific stories, this exhibit and review ask the viewer to put themselves through the experience of internment and view each possible story offered through their own lens. You can hear the recorded testimonies throughout the exhibits echoing through history, just as the exhibit is set up as a timeline that prevents you from seeing what's left to come.

Teeny Awards Recap 2023

Written by Communications Specialist Gavin Bradler

Web Teeny Awards2023 21

On Saturday, January 28, 2023, we gathered at the On the Boards, dressed in our iconic 80s outfits, to celebrate the achievements of teens in our community! The award ceremony featured performances from the outstanding Jet City Improv, Sah Pham– Seattle’sYouth Poet Laureate, Counter Conformity Filmmakers Isa Chiappini & Kimberly Blum, and special musical guest THEM to close out the night! Overall, we awarded 18 outstanding teens and celebrated with families, friends, and community supporters.

This year, as you may know, the Teeny Awards looked a little different. Each of our partners was asked to nominate an outstanding teen in any of their programs and tell us about the efforts that teens they know have been putting in over the last year. Nominations were reviewed by a Panel of Community Arts Advocates, and out of all the incredible nominations they selected the following awardees:

Amelia Chiu from Washington State Historical Society

Sue Yu from Bellevue Arts Museum

Raika Roy Choudhury from Bellevue Arts Museum

Ruby Lee from Rain City Rock Camp

Cross Sideris (they/them) from The Vera Project

Ground Zero (GZ) Radio Interns from Ground Zero

Triona Suiter from TeenTix

Fatra Hussein from Young Women Empowered

Athena Fain from Young Women Empowered

Ri’Chara Mitchell from Young Women Empowered

Izzy Rampersad (She/Her) from 14/48 High School

Natalia Ortiz-Villacorta from ACT Theatre

Isabel Russell from Northwest Theatre Lab

Abby Anderson from Northwest Theatre Lab

Disha Cattamanchi from Penguin Productions

Mason Dauber from Seattle Children's Theatre

Nick Marston from Seattle Rep

Malia Silva from Seattle Rep

The speeches from all of our winners were truly inspiring to all the youth and industry adults at the event. The community vibes were infectious and we had a lot of fun meeting many people for the first time in-person again! The Teeny Awards are back and better than ever, continuing to highlight the teen voice in the arts scene.

GiveBIG SUPERSTAR SORCERER Betsey Brock

Interview with Betsey Brock, Executive Director of On the Boards

Unnamed

Each year we look forward to sharing the amazing stories of our GiveBIG SUPERSTARS with our TeenTix community. This year, we’ve added a “magic” word to this title to reflect the extra special nature of this group of devoted arts access champions who have transformed TeenTix with their consistent support. So without further ado, we’d like to introduce you to our first TeenTix GiveBIG SUPERSTAR SORCERER Betsey Brock! Betsey is one of just nine people in the whole world who has donated to TeenTix during GiveBIG every year since 2013!

Betsey has been a TeenTix fan from the beginning; she first got to know our programs through her good friend Holly Arsenault, the first Executive Director of TeenTix! At the time, Betsey was working at TeenTix Partner Henry Art Gallery, and her husband (curator and former art critic Eric Fredericksen) was asked to work with the TeenTix Press Corps, so the whole family soon got to see TeenTix’s programs in action... Not long after, her son turned 13 and signed up for his own TeenTix Pass. Today, as Executive Director of TeenTix Partner On the Boards, Betsey regularly works with TeenTix to foster an intelligent and engaged audience of young people.
